Some Alternatives to the Dunroven Drive Connector
|
| |
The Site Plan Review Board (SPRB) denied the request of St. Martha's Church in 2003 to connect its parking lot to the cul-de-sac on Dunroven Drive. Residents of Dunroven Drive and the Longview Terrace Development believe that St. Martha's Church did not exhaust all of the alternatives to solving the traffic congestion problem following weekly masses. Some of these alternatives include: |
|
 |
| |
- Continue the practice of having a policeman (or trained security guard) hired by the church to direct traffic as weekly masses are concluded. (Question: How many years could someone be compensated for directing traffic before approaching the cost of constructing the proposed connector road?)
- Negotiate an agreement with Savings Bank of Maine and KeyBank (across Portland Road) for the use of their parking spaces during hours when the banks are closed. (The Unitarian-Univeralist Church has such an arrangement with Kennebunk Savings Bank on Fletcher Street.)
- Explore the construction of a service road behind the Savings Bank of Maine, CVS Pharmacy, and the Kennebunk Savings Bank on Portland Road whereby church traffic could exit at the signals at Merrifield Drive or Post Office Square.
- Negotiating with the Savings Bank of Maine and CVS Pharmacy for a land swap whereby the St. Martha's Church parking lot could be connected to the newly-installed traffic signal at Post Office Square in exchange for a specified number of parking spaces for bank patrons.
- Negotiating a long-term agreement (i.e., 25 years, 50 years, 99 years) with Savings Bank of Maine for an easement over bank property to the signal at Post Office Square in exchange for use of church parking spaces during banking hours. (It is important to note that masses at St. Martha's Church are scheduled for Satuday afternoons and Sunday mornings...when the bank is closed.)

The newly-installed trafffic light (June 2009) at Post Office Square and Portland Road aligns perfectly with St. Martha's Church parking lot. |
